Announcing RESTful Web Services Cookbook

by Subbu Allamaraju on April 19, 2009

I am happy to announce that Mike Amundsen and I are writing a book titled RESTful Web Services Cookbook. This will be published by O’Reilly by the end of 2009.

After helping out a number of teams designing RESTful web services at work, and after going through several debates on various design topics, we wanted to compile what we learned, what works, and what does not, in a handy reference. This lead to the idea of publishing a cookbook, consisting of approximately 60 recipes.

Each recipe in this book will tackle one or more related design problems, and then discuss solutions and trade-offs. We think that learning the trade-offs is sometimes more important than just learning the right way, because an important part of software development is about making judicious trade-offs. In this book, we will therefore try to emphasize pragmatism over principles.

We plan to discuss some key topics for feedback in this blog. So, please don’t forget to subscribe to this blog’s feed. As we make progress with the book, we will be updating the Table of Contents.

If you have questions about this book, or would like to know more about the topics, please leave us a comment.

Superb, and sounds like a great format for a REST book.

I look forward to this! Knowing Subbu, this will no doubt be a source of reference for years to come.

Sounds like a good idea. If its even half as useful as Ruby and Leonard’s book from O’Reilly, then put me down for an advance copy ;)

I am interested in helping with the translation of the book for my language (Brazilian Portuguese). However, as could have access to the original to the work already started? Any impediment on the license or contract with publishers?

Best regards.
